Reiki (pronounced RAY-key) is a simple but powerful Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words – Rei and Ki.

The general definition of the word “Rei” is universal, but the meaning of the Japanese character for “Rei” can also be interpreted to mean higher knowledge or spiritual consciousness, or the wisdom that comes from God and is all-knowing. This Divine wisdom understands each person completely and knows the cause of all health problems and how to heal them.

“Ki” is life energy, or the vital life force. Similar terms exist in other cultures. In Chinese it is called Chi, in Sanskrit it is known as Prana, in Hawaiian it is Ti or Ki. This is the energy that animates all living things. When something is alive, it has life energy circulating in and around it; when it dies, the life energy departs. When our life energy is low, or its flow is restricted, we are more prone to illness. When it is high, we are less likely to get sick. Ki is also the primary energy of our emotions, thoughts, and spiritual existence.

Simply put, Reiki can be described as spiritually guided life energy. It always knows just what a person needs; it is always helpful. The practitioner of Reiki is the conduit through which Divine grace shines through to bring healing. In the eastern medical model, it raises the vibratory level in and around the physical body, clearing away negative energy, and straightening and healing the energy pathways, thus allowing healthy Ki to flow unobstructed. In Western terms, it is a deeply relaxing therapy that enables the body to do what it is masterfully designed to do: heal itself.

Doctors in the U.S. are finding that with Reiki treatments added as alternative therapy in hospitals, patients have generally improved results. The negative side effects of chemotherapy and surgery are reduced, healing time is shortened, pain is reduced or eliminated, stress is relieved. It has been regularly noted that patients receiving Reiki are ready to leave the hospital earlier than those who don’t. Reiki is also used in conjunction with psychotherapy to improve the healing of emotional trauma and other issues.

A Reiki treatment session can involve either hands on or hands off the body. The client can remain fully clothed. It can be given in a complete session by itself, or can be combined with massage. The fact that the client need not undress, and that a complete treatment can be given without even touching the body, or with very light touch, makes this a highly effective therapy for people with conditions that make touch uncomfortable or undressing impractical. People who are very ill with cancer, who are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy, burn victims and hospice patients are some categories that come to mind. Sometimes massage of the muscles is not what is needed or is even contraindicated, as in uncontrolled high blood pressure or fever, whereas Reiki can be very helpful in these situations.

Different people may experience different effects during and after their Reiki treatment, but most everyone experiences a deep, deep calm.

If you know of someone who is undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy, or who is preparing for or who has had recent surgery, for whom massage might be uncomfortable, but is still in need of comfort, healing, relaxation, and pain-relief, Reiki would be very beneficial.

What clients are saying about Reiki:
"Thank you for the wonderful Reiki experience earlier this week. Even when your hands were not touching me, I could feel the heat and energy being transmitted to me through them. With my eyes closed, I could feel the energy on different parts of my body, and when I'd open my eyes - there were your hands exactly where I felt the energy. It's incredible the gift of energy and power - that can be transmitted even without direct touch."
