Bowen Therapy, or Bowen Technique, is a holistically designed therapy which treats the whole body by restoring balance primarily through the autonomic nervous system. It works by acting as a catalyst to the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

A series of gentle manipulations over specific muscles and tendons alternating with periods of “waiting” stimulates the nervous system to “reset” the frequency of the nerve impulses that control the contraction of muscles. The classic Bowen move involves pulling the skin slack away from the muscle, applying appropriate pressure, then releasing. This creates an internal vibration similar to that of plucking a guitar string. This vibration sends a signal to the brain, which in turn processes the information and sends a return signal to the muscle, adjusting its tension. Thus the waiting periods, which are about two minutes in length, are essential to the effectiveness of the treatment, allowing time for the body to process the information and reset itself.

In effect, this allows the body to restore its own balance. It is usually administered through clothing. It is a non-invasive soft-touch therapy and bears little resemblance to other bodywork techniques.

Although Bowen Therapy is a general, holistic treatment restoring balance to the whole body, it has great value as a useful tool for treating specific ailments and conditions of chronic and severe pain. Research has validated the beneficial effects of Bowen in the treatment of such conditions as
  • Asthma
  • Lymphedema
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Insomnia
  • TMJ dysfunction
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Tennis elbow
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Digestive disorders
  • Sacro-iliac and other musculo-skeletal dysfunctions.
Bowen Therapy was developed in the mid- 20th century by an Australian named Tom Bowen. Drawing on his self-education in shiatsu, acupuncture, and massage, he devised and refined his own original method from many years of personal experience in working with patients. Bowen Therapy has spread widely in Australia and from there to Europe and Great Britain, where it is used in hospitals. It was introduced in the United States in 1989. Bowen Therapy is a safe and highly versatile procedure. Its only drawback is in the area of “credibility”. Clients find it hard to accept that such subtle movements can effect such profound changes.
What clients are saying about Bowen Therapy:
From a woman who had suffered with hip pain for many months with no relief:
"I just called to give you an update on my Bowen session. Afterwards I went home and slept for a couple of hours. I felt wiped. I noticed a few days later that there was no more pain in my right hip, and much more range of motion. I am so thankful for your knowledge, your expertise and your giving. I just can’t say enough about how much I appreciate you. Directly after the massage time, while driving home, I was aware that things in my painful areas were starting to "shift". Although I felt great and energized by the body work, by the time that I reached home, I knew that I needed to rest. So I finally paid attention to my body's need for rest. I was surprised about the sleep as well: three hours later I woke up! The reason that I felt that it was significant to tell you about my progress is so that you can let others know not to focus on what one feels during the time on the table---but what one DOESN'T feel afterwards---pain!"

"I enjoyed a very noticeable absence of my always-present low back pain for quite a few days after we added some Bowen to the end of my last massage session. I would like to request that we add it in more often."
L.J. Cincinnati, OH

"I feel like I’m walking on new legs."
S.L., Cincinnati, OH

"I feel as though I have come unlocked."
